Understand Your Risks

In a lab, it's vital to recognize the potential hazards of every chemical used or produced. Before handling chemicals, ensure you've evaluated the implications of potential spills and have a response plan ready. To categorize a spill as simple or complex (often the tricky part), you need to understand the hazard posed by the spilled chemical and the spill's potential impact, both heavily influenced by the spill's size. Here's what to consider to determine if you have a simple spill:

  • 1. Type of spilled chemical
  • 2. Quantity
  • 3. Hazards associated with the spilled chemical
  • 4. Location of the spill
  • 5. Appropriate cleanup method
  • 6. Available personal protective equipment
  • 7. Training level of the laboratory's personnel
